Battle of the drummers 2006, hosted by Little Drummer Boy drum shop in Shreveport, La., proved to be a real challenge this year with many new faces in the competition.  Congratulations to all who placed and hats off to everyone who competed this year.  It takes a lot of guts to get up in a room full of other drummers and show your stuff.  See the results below...

First place in the 18 and up age group went to John Hoffman.  John knocked it out of the park with an impressive variety of chops, groove, and showmanship.  John's ability to utilize different parts of the kit to create his sound pallet had the crowd in awe.  He was all over the scale dynamically which gave his solo a very musical flavor.  John's mastery of odd time feels along with an awesome display of technique and dynamics was more than enough to earn this power player the top honor in this year's competition.

Second place in the 18 and up age group went to Jimmy Wooten.  Jimmy was without a doubt the funkiest drummer in the bunch.  Jimmy came on strong with a variety of funk and fusion styles that laid down an inescapable pocket as deep as the Grand Canyon.  His single kick foot work may have been the ticket to his second place win.  You should hear him play the guitar.....

Third place in the 18 and up age group went to Kevin May.  In a contest that was really too close to call, Kevin May impressed the crowd and the judges alike with a spot on performance of dynamics and stylistic transitions that kept everyone guessing what he would pull off next.  His obvious mastery of triplet and quad combinations between the hands and the feet make Kevin May a force to look out for...

First place in the 17 and down age group went to Mat Bertrand.  Mat came on with a confident and grooving feel.  His transitions between parts in his solo were well organized and smooth.  Mat's showmanship on stage was top notch with crossovers and stick twirling.  Make no mistake, Mat came to win...

Second place in the 17 and down age group went to Jake Pooser.  This guy was so loose you would have thought they wheeled him in on a dolly.  Jake had a level of confidence about him that you don't see in many younger drummers these days.  Jake's solo was dynamic and full of switch-ups and yet he remained very relaxed through the entire performance.
