| DIP YOUR OWN STICKS by Ron Petitt 05-06 | |||
You have heard it a million times… “Stay Loose.” Time and time again you are told to relax your hands when you play because tension is your enemy. This is very true. Muscle tension equals friction which equals massively decreased speed. What I have found in my quest to stay loose in the hands is that my sticks tend to move in my hands as I play causing me to constantly make adjustments to my grip. I have an optimal pivot point in which my fingers fulcrum the sticks. I would like the sticks to remain in this position without me having to apply any pressure to my grip. Pressure = tension = friction = fatigue = slow. What to do? Gloves? -- Too bulky. Stick Tape? -- Changes feel and balance of the stick. Tape on my fingers? -- Hard for me to get used to and kind of a pain to apply. So what to do?

| Start by preparing your sticks. You usually want the grip to be applied to about 8 inches of the butt end of the stick. This should not go all the way to the butt tip though. Measure 8 inches and apply some masking tape. | |||
| Next you should apply a light sanding to allow the spray-on coating to bond better with the stick. | |||
| For the coating I used GOOD-BYE CRACKS drywall crack sealer. I tried spray on tool dip but found that it did not stay on the stick as well. The crack sealer can be purchased at Lowe's in the spray paint section for a couple of bucks. | |||
| After taping off the rest of the sticks, spray on a light coat of the sealer. Do not spray on a thick coat as this will only cause the coating to peel off later. It does not take much to accomplish what we want here. This light coat will have no bearing on the weight or balance of the stick. It is translucent so it is not very visible when dry. | |||
| For drying I punched holes in a cardboard box with a screw driver (ahead of time) and inserted the sticks. | |||
Let the sticks dry for 24 hours before removing the tape. Enjoy and stay loose. |
